About The Professor
Born in Vijayawada in 1964, B.S. Murty started his career in Metallurgy with a Diploma (1983) in Government Polytechnic, Vijayawada (State second rank) and got his BE from VRCE, Nagpur (1986) (University first rank). He obtained his ME (1988) and PhD (1992) from IISc, Bangalore. After serving IIT Kharagpur as a faculty member during 1992-2004, he is currently a Professor of the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, IIT Madras.
He is a Fellow of ASM International (2010), Fellow of Indian National Academy of Engineering (2007), Fellow of Indian Academy of Sciences (2008), Fellow of National Academy of Sciences (2008) and the recipient of Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award (2007), Platinum Jubilee Award of ISCA (2009), Distinguished Alumnus Award of VNIT Nagpur (2010), Metallurgist of the Year Award and Young Metallurgist Award (1994) of Ministry of Steel and Mines (2004), MRSI Medal (2004), INAE Young Engineer Award (1997), INSA Young Scientist Award (1995), ISCA Young Scientist Award (1990). He is the President for Materials Science Section of Indian Science Congress 2012.
His fields of interest are nano materials and other advanced materials. He has authored about 280 publications. He is the Editor of Transactions of IIM and Key Reader to Metallurgical and Materials Transactions. He has supervised 23 PhD (and 9 ongoing) and 31 MTech theses. He has filed ten patents. He has 38 completed and 7 ongoing sponsored research projects (about 5.7 and 8.2 Crore Rupees, respectively).
