He will first explain what offshore and dredging engineering is and will then give examples on fields of interest and will show the global market drivers and some equipment that is being used by dredging processes.

He will then highlight deep sea mining which is currently a hot topic in dredging processes. In the second part of the lecture, the teacher explains more about soil mechanics and shows the different types of testing that are being used in dredging processes.

This lecture willl give you an introduction on cutting by explaining more about the Mohr circle, active and passive soil failure, the different cutting mechanisms and the cutting forces

We continue in this lecture on the 'Introduction to cutting' that was started in lecture 3. The teacher will explain about cutting forces with and without a wedge, about the snow plough effect and about wear and 3D effects. After about 50 minutes the teacher will start the lecture on 'Sand cutting' and will tell you more about the forces on dry sand and wet sand.

We will finalize the topic on 'Sand cutting' by explaining the processes on saturated sand with wedge and continue on the topic of 'Clay cutting'. On the clay cutting topic, dr.ir. Sape Miedema will first explain about the three types of failure in clay; the Curling Type, the Flow Type and the Tear Type. Compared to sand cutting, it only has one type of failure in sand: the Shear Type.

He will then talk more about erosion/scour, the history of initiation of motion and will end the lecture by explaining more about classification of flow layers.

In the second part of the lecture about 'Erosion', dr.ir. Sape Miedema starts by highlighting the literature of initiation of motion and will explain about the different types of forces concerning erosion. A sensitivity analysis on how the Shields curve will depend on different assumptions will also be made and the teacher will end the lecture with equations on how to apply these on e.g. hoppers or dredgers.

In lecture 11, prof.dr.ir. C. van Rhee will explain about 'Hopper sedimentation' in two parts. In this lecture he will give an introduction to a hopper dredge and will then give a description about the TSHD (Trailer Suction Hopper Dredgers) process and explains more on settling velocity. For this lecture it is important to know the influence of concentration, the differences between the settling velocity of one particle and of more than one particle and it is important to understand the difference between settling velocity and sedimentation velocity.
