In this video lesson, Ballet Instructor, Eileen O'Brien, teaches how to do a plie ballet position for ballet dancing beginners.

Video Transcript: "Hi I'm Eileen O'Brien for Expert Village in Suncoast Dance Academy and we are here to demonstrate for beginner ballet or basic plie position in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. Demonstrating for me is Julienne Stevens one of our expert teaches she is standing in her preparation position in 1st position heels together toes turned out. Standing up nice and tall, she is going to do a preparation movement with the arms before beginning your 1st plie and your 1st plies is demi-plié which is half of a plie. Knees goes out over the toes and then the leg straightens and then grand plie where the heels comes off the floor, knees over the toes, heels lower before the legs straightens. Beautiful! She is progressing to 2nd position with the feet apart again demi-plié, knees over the toes, body is still up right and her arm is following the position going on plie on second position where the heels still stay on the floor and that is the only position where that is true. 3rd position demi-plié and demi-plié, grand plie again heels comes off the floor, heels lower before the legs straighten and the arms follows. Video Transcript: "Hi, I'm Eileen O'Brien for Expert Village in Suncoast Dance Academy and the second part of our series for beginners ballet is going to demonstrate tendus. Demonstrating for me here is Joleen Stevens she is starting in your 1st position heels together toes turned out and her arms in a prosperity position. She is doing preparation with her arms, beautiful and she is going to do tendus to the front. With the arm positions forward and beautifully turned out. Tendus, tendus, to the side or second position and notice the arm is following that. It is like she is drawing a line with her toe and erasing it. She is doing a straight line and bringing the foot back in and now she is finishing to the side which is the 4th of our routine to do on quad positions which is front side back and side and at the end of the exercise her arms come back down to preparation positions. Thank you Joleen that was beautiful and that conclude our 2nd clip for tendus."

My demonstrator is Joleen Stevens she is starting in first position doing the preparation with the arms. Degage comes slightly off the floor, the leg extends. Beautiful, beautiful stretch, pointed foot. Dagage to the side and the arm follows and degage to the back with a Arrière and she repeats to the side which again follow the routine of on quad meaning front foot, on side to the side. Beautiful Joleen. She finishes with a preparation of arms and that concludes our degages for beginners ballet."

Demonstrating for me is Joleen Stevens and she is starting on her 1st position. She would do preparation with the arms and to do that front to the side to the back. Notice she is doing quarters and stopping on each point. We are going to do that one more time. Beautiful Joleen and now she is going to do it without stopping and doing half of rand de jambre and I want it slightly in the air or la ere and finishes in first and the arm comes down with a plie and she finishes. Beautiful Joleen and that is our rand de jambre."

Demonstrating for me is Joleen Stevens one of our expert instructors. Note that she is starting in a 3rd position feet turned out and she is executing the preparation with the arms on the count of 1 her foot is going to lift up off the floor quickly, pass up to the knee, pass behind the knee and close behind the foot and the reverse coming up. Passing through the knee and coming down to the front. We are going to do that one more time again on the count of 1 quick, 2,3, and 4 are slower passing behind the knee, closing behind the foot and coming back to the front making sure the knee stays turned out the entire time. Beautiful Joleen, she finishes in a 3rd position and the arms comes down and that is our passe."

Demonstrating for me is Joleen Stevens and before she executes this step we are going to point out that she is standing with her heels together and toes turned out, hips are nice and equal here. So one hip is not higher than the other. As she executes the passe she takes the leg up slowly being careful to keep the hip square and she is stretching the leg out in a developpe position which means to develop. She just finished to the front, we are going to the side, the knees straightens and the leg comes down. Beautiful and passe to the back, slowly with passe developpe into a beautiful la ere position and back to our side position passe developpe and she always finishes in her first position. Arms down that was beautiful Joleen and that finishes our passe developpe."

Demonstrating for me is Jolene Stevens she's starting in a beautiful turned out first position with here arms in a preparation position arms come out, her legs are going to come in and strike the floor and pull back to her coupe position. She's doing it in sequence of four to the front or devant, she's doing four to the side executing the same movement each time, and four to the back with the knee turned out and toes are pointed, and she's repeating four to the side. To complete anqua front side back and side, and feet finished in a beautiful first with the arms back down for preparation position, thank you Jolene that was beautiful and that's our frappe's."

Demonstrating for me is Jolene Stevens she's starting off with here feet in first position heels together, toes apart. She's doing a beautiful Pas de deux to get her leg up to the bar notice that she's standing nice and square, her hips are square she's doing two Développé and then stretching so that her nose goes to the knee. Beautiful and then come right up and she's breathing in and out as she's doing these stretches. As she does her pleas note that her knee is going over her toes and pleas are always should, she's going to turn do a side stretch hips are square, shoulders are square and she's stretching a nice lateral stretch. Stretches the sides and two demi-plié again the right leg that's on the bar is turned out and the toes are pointed and stretching away from the bar. And the leg comes back to passé, that was beautiful Jolene and thats our bar stretches."

She's standing in a beautiful first position with heels together toes turned out, she's doing the preparation movement for the arms and she's going to extend her right leg straight forward and up in the air, four times with a beautiful straight leg. The foot points as soon as she leaves the floor, four to the side notice that she's keeping the shoulders and her hips nice and square. Notice that her left foot her supporting foot is staying in that beautiful turned out position and she's finish with four the side. Again going through the anqua configuration of front side back and side, arms come down demi plie beautiful finish, thank you Jolene that was beautiful and that concludes our grande battma."

She's starting in a first position she'll take her feet to a second position and come back to first position and second position plea, first position and now she'll do a continuously across the floor. Chasse means to chase so when we're doing this, can we do that one more time again, one leg chases the second leg out of the way, and it's used as a connecting movement. She can also do this position traveling from front to back from third position to fourth position. Do we want to do it backwards? Third to fourth one more time, beautiful and that concludes our chasse. "

Demonstrating for me today is Jolene Stevens she's starting in a first position, heels together, toes turned out and she's doing a plié and the right leg extends and she glides. The movement is suppose to mimic that of a person gliding on ice or gliding across the ice, Jolene is doing first position now she will show us the same step in third position. Closing in third position again gliding and gliding and back, beautiful and now she's going to do a glissade combination called glissade sanja. Alternating the changing from front to back and again lots of plié and glide and glide, that was beautiful Jolene and that concludes our glissade."

Video Transcript: "Hi! I'm Eileen O'Brien for Expert Village and Suncoast Dance Academy. In this clip, we will be demonstrating pique's. A movement moving across the floor for our beginner ballet. Demonstrating for me is Jolynn Stevens and before we do the actual step, we are going to point out several important qualities of this step. She is doing a pleaye on her supporting leg. The knee is over the toes, her right leg extended. As she steps onto that right leg, her left leg comes up in a passe position, the toes slide down the leg and replace the leg that she was standing on. Pique means to step onto a straight leg and it is important the dancer pushes her hip completely over that leg that she is stepping onto. As you can see, she is doing that beautifully and she is doing it onto a flat foot. Now Jolynn will demonstrate it going into a relavae position on pique and down, and up and down, beautiful. Shoulders are nice and square, hips are nice and square and back pique. That was a beautiful pique Jolynn. That concludes our piques."

JoLynn Stevens is demonstrating for us today and before we begin the actual turn, she's going to demonstrate the positions of the arms and the legs that occur during the turn. She's starting in a 1st. She's going to second position and closing back to 1st. Arms and legs open. Arms and legs closed. Arms and legs open. Arms and legs close and coming back the other direction, notice that when her feet are apart her arms are apart. When her feet are together her arms are together. Beautiful. Now she's going to do the actual turn in Relevea, she opens the arms and turns and notice that the arms are going through the same positions that she did without the turns. Opening to 2nd. Closing in 1st. Opening in 2nd. Can we do that one more time, JoLynn? To the right. Arms open and close. Shoulders are nice and square, hips are level, and she's spotting; she's looking in one place with her eyes as she's opening and closing. Those were beautiful Chaines. And that concludes our Chaines."

Demonstrating for us today is Joleen Stevens. She's going to start in a beautiful position with her heels together and her toes turned out. She's going to plie first, jump straight up in the air, full length extending the feet, and coming back down into plie. Now she's going to do that in a series of four. And one, and two, and three, and four. Beautiful. She's also going to do a sotae in a second position. And plie and jump and series of four, two, three, and four. Thank you. She's going to come back into first now and demonstrate an achipae, which means 'to escape.' Arms and legs are together, arms and legs open to second, and she brings them back together again. Notice that when the arms are apart, her feet are apart, when the arms are together, the feet are together. Good. Now we're going to put it all together and do sotaes and achipae sotaes. And one, and two, and three, and four, and one, and two. Beautiful. Very nice. Thank you so much. And that concludes our small jumps."

It's time when the teachers get to thank their students for their attention and the students thank the teachers for teaching them such a wonderful information. Demonstrating for us is Jolene Stevens and she will be using movements referred as to Port de Bras with the arms. She'll be going through some our basic positions. And she's going to first position with the arms nice and easy and the arm up and up. All this is done to music compliment very slowly with the student breathing. It concludes with acurte, the traditional step to thank everybody for coming to ballet class. It finishes in a first position. That was beautiful Jolene and that concludes our reverence."
