Documentary Description

Widely recognised as one of the greatest and best preserved sites in the Classical World, Aphrodisias is a magnificent city of marble dedicated to the goddess of beauty, love and sex - Aphrodite. It is widely recognized as one of the best-preserved sites in the Classical World. Although forgotten until the mid-20th century, the city's remarkable state of preservation led to comparisons with Pompeii. A devastating earthquake in the 7th century destroyed the city and damage caused to the remaining buildings is still plainly visible. Watch as the city is recreated by a team of historical detectives who use evidence from recent excavations, scientific studies and historical documents to piece together clues as to what ancient Aphrodisias looked like.

This installment in the LOST WORLDS series takes a look into a locale that for centuries was thought to have perhaps been a largely fictional creation: the city of Aphrodite. Now known as one of the best preserved archaeological sites in the Classical world, the city built in tribute to the goddess of love is a marvel of ancient architecture and art.
