Esters

Esters
In this video lecture, Chemguy discusses esters, compounds made from alcohols and a carboxylic acids. Esters give flavors to various industrial products. They give our food and vegetable flavors and various flavors that are in plants and other things.

Chemguy explains how esters are formed. He goes to show how the OH of the carboxylic acid and the H of the oxide group in the alcohol react together to form an ester. As the carboxylic acid and alcohol react, water is form in addition to the ester. In other words, the two are synthesized by the removal of water (dehydration synthesis).

The example discussed in this video is the reaction between a methanoic acid and ethanol, which in a reaction produces an ester called ethyl methanoate.

Organic Substitution Reactions
In this video lecture, Chemguy teaches about organic substitution reactions. Substitution reactions only occur with alkanes and benzene rings.

Examples discussed in this lesson include:
1) Ethane + Br2 → Bromoethane + HBr

2) CH3CH2CH2CH3 + Cl2 → Chlorobutane + HCl

3) C6H6 + I2 → Iodobenzene + HI

Addition Reactions
In this video lecture, Chemguy instructs about addition reactions in organic chemistry. Addition reactions only happens with alkenes and alkynes.

Examples discussed in this lesson include:

1) Propene + F2 → 1,2-difloropropane
2) Propene + 2Cl2 → 1,1,2,2-tetrachloropropane

Lecture 15
Combustion and Elimination

Combustion and Elimination
In this video lecture, Chemguy goes over combustion and elimination reactions. He explains hydrocarbon combustion, a reaction that occurs whenever a hydrocarbon is reacted with O2(g). The products of such reaction would be CO2 + H2O for a complete combustion, or CO + H2O for an incomplete combustion. The other type of reaction discussed is organic elimination reactions, the exact opposite of addition reactions. In an elimination reaction, the compound forms a double bond after being reacted with a catalyst.
