Why Choose WordPress?

Why Choose WordPress?
In this video, we explain why you should choose WordPress. Out of all the website builders in the world, why is WordPress the best?

First, WordPress is free. Not only does it come at no cost, but it's license also makes it free. No-one can restrict what you can or cannot do with WordPress.

Second, there are excellent hosting options which make it easy to run your WordPress site. Companies like GoDaddy make it easy to install WordPress and make it run quickly and safely.

Third, WordPress is easy. It's super simple to write posts, add images, and express yourself.

Fourth, WordPress has many, many extra features available. The Plugin Directory at https://wordpress.org/plugins/ has over 45,000 free plugins.

Fifth, WordPress looks beautiful. There are over 4,000 themes available at https://wordpress.org/themes/, plus there are many commercial theme options: https://wordpress.org/themes/commercial/. You can also build your own WordPress theme with a framework such as https://underscores.me/.

Sixth, WordPress is under constant, active development. WordPress 1.0 came out in 2004 and there have been regular releases ever since. This means that WordPress continues to get better.

Finally, WordPress is popular. This means that many people and companies depend on WordPress, so they put a huge amount of time and energy into making it great.

In this video, we'll walk you through the process of installing WordPress automatically at GoDaddy. You can choose a domain name, and also a data center (North America and Europe).

You can also create a WordPress username and password during the installation process.

After the installation, you can go directly to the WordPress admin area.

On the other hand, GoDaddy also provides a set-up wizard which allows you to add your address, social profiles and other information. Plus, you can also design your site. You can also use the Customizer that we discussion in Lesson 25.

Let's start learning how to use WordPress. You will need a WordPress site to follow along from this point. In the previous two videos, we showed you options for installing WordPress.

To login, go to /wp-login.php. Some themes may have this set up for you. Enter your username and password.

When you login, the first thing you see is the WordPress Dashboard.

There's an "At a Glance" box that gives you important statistics about your site.

There's an "Activity" box which shows recent posts and comments.

There's also a "Quick Draft" box where you can start the draft of a blog post.

At the top of the box is "Screen Options" which allows you to control what's on the dashboard.

The Dashboard can be an extremely helpful tool for monitoring your website.

How to Create WordPress Posts
In this lesson, we're going to look at posts in WordPress.

WordPress started as a blogging platform, so it's excellent at creating blog posts. This class is building a site for a city called "Wordville", so we're going to use blog posts for news items.

- Go to Posts, then Add New.
- Enter a Title, "New Construction Project"
- Click "Change Permalink" and you can update the URLs for your site

Here is some suggested text for your post:

"There was some big news in Wordville recently. Construction of a large project called W3 was finished."

On the right-hand side of the post screen, there are a "Publish" box, a "Format" box to change settings for your post. There's also a "Categories" and "Tags" box that we'll explain in a later video. Finally, there's a "Featured Image" box which can associate an image with your post.

If your computer shuts off, or you close a tab accidentally ... don't worry. WordPress automatically saves your post every 60 seconds. These are in the "Revisions" feature.

The "Excerpt" feature allows you to create a short summary of your post.

"Custom Fields" is a useful feature, but not all themes support it.

"Comments" allows you to enable or disable comments for your post, and you can reply directly inside the WordPress admin.

Add Categories to WordPress Posts
Categories can help you organize your WordPress content. Categories can also your visitors to find the content they're looking for.

In this video, Topher has a post called "Local Events Continue to Increase".

On the right-hand side of the post is a box called "Categories". By default, there is a category called "Uncategorized" because WordPress must have a category.

Click "Add New Category" and you can create new categories for your posts. If you assign your post to a new category, WordPress will show the new category when you view the post.

It is possible to have child, nested categories. One example would be "Music" as a child category of "Events".

Click "Categories" in your WordPress admin menu, and you can manage your site's categories.

Add Tags for WordPress Posts
In this video, we're going to look at WordPress tags and how they are different from categories.

Topher is using a sample post with the title "Classic Rock Concert In the Park!"

The text in the post is, "This Tuesday we'll be showcasing some of the greatest bands of the 60's and 70's. Be there or be square!"

Tags are keywords that you can use to organize your content. They are different from categories because:

- Tags have no parent / child structure.
- Tags also do not appear on the site's frontpage ... you have to visit the main post page to see the tags.
- Tags make it easier for Google and visitors to find your content.

Introducing WordPress Plugins
In this video, we'll look at WordPress plugins, which add extra features to your site. There are over 45,000 WordPress plugins available!

https://wordpress.org/plugins/ is the place to start finding plugins.
Featured plugins include bbPress, BuddyPress, Jetpack, Akismet, Theme Check and WP Super Cache.

Popular plugins include Google Analytics, All-in-One SEO, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, Contact Form 7 and many more.

Inside your WordPress site, go to "Plugins", then "Installed Plugins" to see the plugins on your site.

You can install plugins from inside your WordPress site, using exactly the same directory you saw at WordPress.org. You can also record your favorites for easy access.

You'll see how to install a plugin, using Simple Page Ordering as an example: https://wordpress.org/plugins/simple-page-ordering/. This allows you to easily reorder the pages on your site.

The main "Plugin" page allows you to activate, deactivate and delete plugins.

The plugin directory has lots of information about each plugin. You can see if the plugin has been tested with your version of WordPress. Topher demonstrates using this plugin: https://wordpress.org/plugins/two-factor/

It's wise to delete any plugins that are not active. They are a security issue if you don't update them.

Installing Your First WordPress Plugin
In this video, we're going to combine several of the skills we learned earlier in the class.

We're going to use the EmbedPress plugin at https://wordpress.org/plugins/embedpress/ to add a Google Map to our town site.

Here is a list of the embeds that WordPress supports: https://codex.wordpress.org/Embeds. Unfortunately, Google Maps is not among that list. However, if WordPress doesn't do something out-of-the-box, there's always a plugin to help you.

Using the EmbedPress plugin, you can embed Google Maps using just a URL. Go to "Plugins", then "Add New" and you can install EmbedPress.

With EmbedPress installed, you can take a Google Map URL and add it directly to any WordPress post.

Congratulations. You've just added your first, working WordPress plugin!

Creating a Contact Form with WordPress Plugins

Creating a Contact Form with WordPress Plugins
In this lesson, we're going to set up a contact form in WordPress. We'll use the Ninja Forms plugin to create a stylish contact form for our site.

In the previous video, we demonstrated how to add plugins. This time we'll install the Ninja Forms plugin (https://wordpress.org/plugins/ninja-forms/).

Ninja Forms will allow us to create custom forms and allow us to select which fields we'd like in the forms. We can drag the fields to reorder them.

Each field has a settings box that includes some of the following settings:
- Label & Label Position
- Required
- Restrictions
- Display (example: Custom CSS classes)
- Placeholder & Default Value

Once the fields are created, we can edit the Email & Actions area to customize the emails and success message. The email sender, recipient, subject, and body can be customized. Tokens from the fields can be used too.

Once the form is published, we can add it to a page using a shortcode. The shortcode can be found next to the form in the Forms area. Copy that shortcode and paste it in your page.

Always be sure to test the form once done.

Two other Contact Form plugins worth trying are:
- Caldera Forms (https://wordpress.org/plugins/caldera-forms/)
- Contact Form 7 (https://wordpress.org/plugins/contact-form-7/)

Ecommerce with WordPress Plugins
In this video, we're going to explore e-commerce in WordPress. This will just be a showcase to introduce you to what's possible with WooCommerce.

WooCommerce is the most popular e-commerce plugin in WordPress. Interestingly, it powers about 40% of all online stores on the internet (not just WordPress, but the internet).

WooCommerce is also backed by Automattic, one of the most well-known and reliable companies in WordPress.

It's powerful, has a wide variety of features, and has additional add-ons for purchase. For these reasons, we highly recommend it as the go-to solution for e-commerce in WordPress.

After installing WooCommerce from the plugin directory, you'll be taken to an easy-to-use setup wizard.

After the setup, you'll see the Products menu on the left side. New products are easy to add in there. You'll also need to set up the payment gateway(s) to be ready to sell.

How to Use Jetpack in WordPress
In this video, we're going to cover JetPack. JetPack has multiple plugins in one, and gives your WordPress site super-powers.

It has plugins for:
- Traffic growth
- Security
- Site management
- Content Creation
- Spam protection
- Backups
- and more

One of the advantages of JetPack is that it connects to WordPress.com's servers.

This saves you valuable resources and gives your site a speed boost. Your server won't have to perform some of the server intensive tasks, but instead out-sources it to WordPress.com.

For example, figuring out related posts can be very server intensive once you have hundreds of posts.

Jetpack sends over your posts to WordPress.com's server (behind the scenes). Their high powered servers run the algorithms to find the related posts, then they send the results to you when completed.

This makes your site faster than processing the related posts itself.

Introducing WordPress Themes
In this video, we talk about WordPress themes. Themes are what makes your site look the way it does. They provide the styling and the layout.

Themes are some of the most powerful parts of WordPress. They allow you to make your site look unique.

At https://wordpress.org/themes/ , there are thousands of themes available for free. Clicking on a theme gets you more information about it, such as a description, a demo, a picture, and author information.

There are also commercial themes available at https://wordpress.org/themes/commercial/ and at 3rd party websites.

Commercial themes need to be downloaded and uploaded into your site. Free themes, from the WordPress directory, can be installed directly from your admin area.

Each theme has a customizer that can be used when the theme is activated. The options in the customizer vary from theme to theme. But each one makes it easy to change various parts of the site, without the need to know code.

As you change the customizer, you can see a preview of your site to the right. When done, be sure to save to make the changes appear on the live site.

How to Choose Good WordPress Themes

How to Choose Good WordPress Themes
In this lesson, we're going to teach you how to choose a good WordPress theme. Where can you download themes and which ones can you trust?

There are two aspects to a good theme:
1) The quality of the code behind the theme
2) The quality of the look of theme

You don't need a theme that looks exactly how you want it to look in the end. Instead, you do need to find a theme that looks close enough so that you can easily change it a bit to get the result you want.

Themes at https://wordpress.org/themes/ are heavily vetted. So they are generally going to be good themes, code-wise.

They don't, however, look at the design. Design is going to be more subjective, so you'll find a wide-variety of designs in the theme directory.

GoDaddy Blogger is a good place to find reputable theme reviews. For example, https://www.godaddy.com/garage/webpro/wordpress/15-free-word...

Also, check out the following 16 tips before purchasing a theme:
https://www.web-savvy-marketing.com/2012/09/purchase-tips-re...

If you want to learn more about what makes a good theme, consider joining the Theme Review Team at WordPress.org.

You don't have to be a coder or tech savvy to join the team. You'll learn how to review themes using their checklist. Find out more at https://make.wordpress.org/themes/

The WordPress Theme Customizer
In this video, we learn about the WordPress theme customizer which allows you visually design your site just by clicking. You don't need to know any code to use the Customizer.

With the WordPress customizer, you can make your site look how you want it to be, rather than what it looks like out of the box.

One of the great things about the customizer is the ability to preview your changes. When you change an option, you'll see the change in the preview to the right. This doesn't affect your live site until you save your results.

Each theme's customizer is going to include different options. More modern themes generally include more options.

Examples of options include:
- Site title, tagline
- Site logo and favicon
- Font selection
- Theme colors
- Site width
- Custom CSS

At the bottom right of the customizer, you can also choose to preview in desktop, tablet, or mobile views.

Introducing WordPress Widgets

Introducing WordPress Widgets
A widget is a small piece of code that does one small, specific thing in WordPress. Traditionally, they go in a sidebar, but they can go anywhere around your main content.

In Appearance - Widgets, you can find the installed widgets. On the left side are the widgets you can use. On the right side are the widget areas provided by the theme.

You can drag widgets from the left side into an area on the right (for example, into Footer). Also, you can drag a widget from one widget area to another.

Clicking on a widget will give you the options available. To get rid of a widget, drag it from the right side to the left.

There is no saving in this area, except for the options for the individual widgets.

Many plugins include widgets. Installing a new plugin installs the widget as well. You can find new widgets by searching for them in the WordPress plugin directory.

Creating a WordPress Contact Widget
In this video, we're going to create a WordPress widget with our contact details including our address and a map.

We're going to be using Contact Widgets (https://wordpress.org/plugins/contact-widgets/). It allows us to display a contact form, a Google map, and social connections.

After it's installed in the plugins area, the widget is available to use. Go to Appearance then Widgets to find it.

We can drag the Contact Widget into the footer widget area. Clicking on it will display the available options.

If we wanted, we can use one Contact Widget for the form, one for the map, and one for the social media icons. This will allow us position and order the items as we'd like.

WordPress Menus and Navigation
In this lesson, we're going to learn about WordPress menus and site navigation. Without good navigation, users won't be able to find all the excellent content on your website.

We can't stress enough how important quality navigation is. Plan out your navigation and create a cohesive structure.

When building it, you don't have to have the content ready. You can create the navigation to plan it out and have a mental sitemap.

Under Appearance then Menus is where you create your menus. On the left is the available content. You can drag it to the menu on the right to create a menu item to that content.

On the right, clicking on it will get you the available options for that specific menu item.

You can also drag the menu items to order them.

Dragging a menu item further to the right will make it a sub menu item of the one above it. Not all themes display sub menu items with drop downs, but many do.

Each menu can be put in one or more menu positions in the theme.

Under Screen Options (top right), you can get more available content and menu item options.

There is a Custom Menu widget that you can use to put a menu in a widget area.

The WordPress Tools
In this video, we're going to talk about the Tools menu in the WordPress admin area.

By default, WordPress has two tools, but new plugins can add new tools. As you add plugins to the site, be sure to check the Tools menu to see if a new tool was added.

The first tool we'll look at is Press This. Press This allows you to add a bookmark to your browser. Clicking the Press This button will add the current site to your WordPress site.

It's an easy way to blog about a site or idea that you have while browsing the internet.

Here's how to set it up. Drag the Press This button to your browser toolbar.

Then navigate to any site. Click the Press This button and it opens a new browser tab with a WordPress editor. It'll populate a short description, an image, and a source URL. You can modify this data as you'd like.

When done, you can save it as a draft or publish it.

Another WordPress tool available by default is the Categories and Tags Converter. It allows you to change categories to tags and vice versa.

Under the Tools menu, we also have the Importer. With it, you can import content from:
- Blogger
- Blogroll
- LiveJournal
- Movable Type or Type Pad
- RSS
- Tumblr
- Another WordPress site (including a WordPress.com blog)

You can also export your site's content from the Tools menu.

Managing WordPress Users

Managing WordPress Users
In this video, we're going to talk about managing users in WordPress.

In the admin in the left menu, you can access all the users.

Some of the user information will be used in the front-end of the site. For example, in a forum profile or blogger profile, user information is usually displayed.

The user image is imported automatically from gravatar.com if the user email address is used for an account at gravatar.com.

Each user's details can be edited by clicking on the user link. Keep in mind that email addresses need to be unique and can't be shared among users.

Each user has a user role. User roles are defined permissions that a user can or can't do. There are 5 default roles:

1) Administrator: can manage everything (content, users, settings, plugins, themes, etc)

2) Editor: can do everything with all content. But, can't change settings, plugins, and other non-content items.

3) Author: can do everything only with their own content. They can write, edit, and publish.

4) Contributor: can write, but not publish. All content must be reviewed by an editor or administrator.

5) Subscriber: can hardly do anything. The account is useful for being able to log in and view some restricted content or comment on some content. It's a common user role for an e-commerce site's buyers.

There are many plugins available that modify user roles and/or allow new custom user roles.

WordPress Settings, Part 1

WordPress Settings, Part 1
In this video, we're going to explore the settings in WordPress. Many of these settings set the foundation for WordPress' behind the scenes work.

In the left menu, you'll see the Settings sub navigation.

If you're running WordPress in a subfolder (e.g. "blog"), then your WordPress Address and Site Address will be different.

Your WordPress Address is the full URL to your WordPress install, including the sub folder. For example, https://www.ostraining.com/blog/

Your Site Address is the address that you want users to type into their browser to reach your site.

Be careful with changing either of these two settings, since it could take down your whole site. They should only be changed when your site's location changes.

The email address is the default email address that will be used to send and receive emails. Plugins, like contact form plugins, can add custom email addresses. But, if an email address isn't provided in a plugin function, this email address is the one that's usually used.

If you want anyone to be able to create an account, you can turn on the membership setting. The user role should be left as Subscriber in almost all cases.

Be sure to set your timezone to your own timezone or whatever makes sense for your site. If you leave it as the default, you might mix up publishing times or get confused when times appear "incorrect".

In the Writing settings, you can adjust the default categories and set up "Post via email". Post via email allows you create new posts by sending an email to your WordPress site.

The Reading settings allow you to adjust:
- The home page
- # of posts per blog page
- Search engine visibility

Search engine visibility allows you to tell search engines to index or not index your site.

But, keep in mind that not all search engines will respect your wishes. So if you really want to hide the site, use https://www.ostraining.com/blog/coding/how-to-password-prote... but in the root of your site.

WordPress Settings, Part 2
In this video, we continue going through WordPress' settings. This covers the Discussion, Media and Permalinks tabs.

The Discussion settings allow us to modify any settings regarding blog comments. The settings are self-explanatory, but one needs clarification: "Allow link notifications from other blogs (pingbacks and trackbacks) on new articles"

Other blogs can send your site a notice that they linked to your article. Enabling this setting allows that site to be linked to automatically under your blog post. For spam protection reasons, we recommend turning off this setting.

Let's look at the Media settings next. Every time you upload an image, WordPress automatically creates three different sizes. This area allows you to adjust the sizes.

Permalinks stand for "permanent links". The settings allow you to modify the link structure of your site, including creating a custom structure.

When new plugins are installed, they'll often add their settings in the main Settings area. For example, installing EmbedPress adds the "EmbedPress" sub menu item under the Settings menu link.

Lecture 34
Keeping Your WordPress Site Safe
Play Video
Keeping Your WordPress Site Safe
In this video, we're going to show you ways to keep your WordPress site safe and secure.

The latest version of the WordPress core is secure. Secure doesn't mean that it's impossible for it to be hacked, but simply that there are no known security issues with it. Whenever a security issue is found, it's fixed and the fix becomes available in the new release.

WordPress does security updates automatically. That means when the WordPress team releases a new security fix, your site downloads it and installs it by itself ... even when you're asleep.

This makes it incredibly unlikely that your site will be hacked via the WordPress core.

Most hacks occur via vulnerable 3rd party plugins instead. We'll get to this later in the lesson.

All that being said, when there's a new major release of WordPress (for example, 4.8), it won't be installed automatically. Only security updates get automatic installs. So be sure to keep your site up to date.

The second most likely reason for a hack is weak passwords. Bots can be used to guess hundreds or thousands of passwords per second. So if your password isn't complex, it can be guessed in a short time.

You can use a password manager like https://www.lastpass.com/ to create long, secure passwords.

Also, the Force Long Passwords plugin can be used to require all users to create longer passwords:
https://wordpress.org/plugins/force-strong-passwords/

Next, plugins and themes must be kept up to date. Also, if you're no longer using some, uninstall them. Vulnerable plugins are the most common way that sites get hacked.

As an extra step, you can install security plugins. Here are three worth considering:

1) Jetpack, a meta plugin we covered earlier in the series.

Jetpack has a security feature called Brute Force Protect. Remember the bots that can be used to guess many passwords per second? Brute Force Project blocks the bots after a certain number of failed attempts. This also saves your server's resources and thus speed.

2) Sucuri Security - Auditing, Malware Scanner and Security Hardening (https://wordpress.org/plugins/sucuri-scanner/)

This Sucuri plugin lets you scan your site to make sure it hasn't been hacked. It also has some hardening features. Hardening is a concept that means to make it harder to hack.

3) iThemes security (https://wordpress.org/plugins/better-wp-security/)

This is a multi-purpose security plugin that is worth using. It contains a variety of features, which are listed on its plugin page. It even has a brute force protect feature and an enforce strong passwords feature.

For this reason, we don't recommend running all the security plugins at the same time. Instead, Sucuri can be used for the scanner and iTheme's features for the hardening, for example.

For more detailed security information, check out https://codex.wordpress.org/Hardening_WordPress

Guarding Against WordPress Comment Spam
In this video, we're going to talk about how to fight WordPress comment spam. Spam is undesired, unsolicited, and irrelevant content that's posted by someone else.

There are hundreds of plugins that deal with spam. The reason is that spam's common on the internet. You can be sure that if you allow comments on your site, someone will try to add spam.

Akismet is installed by default on every WordPress site, but an API key is required. It can be used to route comments to their servers for analysis. They process the comments and check for potential spam.

Batch Comment Spam Deletion can be used to empty your spam without crashing the site. Here's the plugin's listing:
https://wordpress.org/plugins/batch-comment-spam-deletion/

WordPress has hundreds of free spam plugins, so if you don't like one, try another.

Backing up Your WordPress Site
In this video, we're going to talk about backing up your site. It may seem like a mundane concept, but it's vital. If your site ever crashes and you need to restore it, you'll be happy you had a backup.

A plugin is needed to create a backup from the admin.

You want a plugin that's going to backup your files and database. It also needs to be reliable, so good reviews and a high install count are a must.

BackWPup (https://wordpress.org/plugins/backwpup/) is a good choice. But, there are others you can try.

Each plugin has its own unique features. However, one thing that we really recommend is that you backup to a remote server. That way if something happens to your server, you'll still have your backup.

Also, if you have a store or other valuable user info, we'd recommend scheduling backups so that you'll for sure have a backup.

Many times, a web host will have a backup utility that can be used instead of a plugin. GoDaddy is one example and makes it easy to create backups for the site.

Using a WordPress Staging Site

Using a WordPress Staging Site
In this video, we're going to talk about setting up a staging site. In a staging site, you can test your changes without risking your live site. The staging site is an exact copy of your live site.

Some hosts, like GoDaddy, have a staging server feature available with the hosting plan. This is the best choice, since building your own staging server can be complicated.

The staging site needs to be synced with the live site. Then the changes can be made on the staging site.

Once the changes are tested and everything is confirmed to be OK, the changes can be pushed to the live site.

For those without a hosting feature like that, you can restore a backup (using a different database) in a sub folder or another location. This is more labor intensive, but it's worth the effort whenever you have risky changes that need to be made.

Speeding up Your WordPress Site

Speeding up Your WordPress Site
In this video, we'll discuss the two main ways to optimize your site and make it load faster.

One of the easiest ways to speed up your site is to make your images smaller. http://optimizilla.com/ can be used to optimize the image size.

The next thing we can do is caching.

Each time a user accesses a page, the server builds the entire page. Caching saves the page-builds and allows the next person to receive the complete build as the previous person.

This saves the server from having to rebuild it each time. Thus, it loads quicker for the user.

WP Super Cache is an excellent plugin for caching:
https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-super-cache/

Also, some hosts - like GoDaddy - have built in WordPress caching available. In this case, use the host's caching, rather than a plugin. It will almost certainly work better, since it's built specifically for their servers.

Upgrading Your WordPress Site
In this video, we'll cover how to update WordPress, your plugins, and your themes. We'll also cover what you can do if something goes wrong during an update.

Before doing any updates, make a backup of your site or do it on a staging server. Both of these were covered in previous lessons.

Minor releases (example: 3.8.2) and security releases will be updated automatically in WordPress.

Major releases need to be updated manually. For example, going from 3.8.4 to 3.9.0 requires a manual update.

Updating is a one click process from the admin.

If you see a "failed update" message, delete the .maintenance file in your WordPress root using your host's File Manager.

If the site still doesn't appear, download https://wordpress.org/latest.zip and unzip it in your WordPress root. It will reset your core files, but not touch any other files or your content.

Plugins and themes can be bulk updated from the update area.
