In this video lesson, Makeup Artist Matt Cail teaches how to look like Heath Ledger's Joker with makeup shaped like a smeared red smile.



Video Transcripts: MATT CAIL: "Now let's move on to a smaller brush and our red makeup. Because we're going to go apply our Joker's maniacal smile. Now like the rest of the makeup this is going to be very haphazardly put on. Again this is not something really neat that the Joker's done. It's just been something really quickly he's slopped on. Almost like with one hand. I've even seen some people do that but I'm going to demonstrate with a brush because that's what more people can relate to. So make a relatively solid though not perfectly solid middle layer here around the lips. See what I'm doing? I'm making these reddest of all. Which means I might have to go back because there's going to be some white makeup I've intentionally placed on here. It kind of gets more of like a pinkish mottled sort of like shape here. It starts blending the red paint with the white paint. That's okay don't worry about that. But again we don't want to segregate the colors out. We want them to mix and flow and look like they were just slopped on by a hand at 5 o'clock on the morning. So what you're going to do is you're going to really though try to make the lips intensely red to be able to draw some focus to them. But beyond that everything else is like smudge. See this little white area here coming in there? That's totally fine. We do not want clearly defined edges. I don't mean to harp on that too much but the way the brain works we automatically try to separate colors out and this makeup is very different than that. So we're definitely going to keep doing it on this side and we're going to, basically what we're going to do we're going to extend the smile over onto the other side and you're going to have your maniacal joker smile firmly in place."
